John Wayne does Westerns
False.
Well, true. But that's not all he does. This classic film, set in Ireland is about a former wrestler.
This is my favorite John Wayne movie. He is absolutely perfect in this role!
Synopsis of The Quiet Man
Sean Thornton (played by John Wayne) is a simple man trying to escape a traumatizing event from his adult life back in the States by heading home to Innisfree, Ireland. While trying to buy back the little cottage that once belonged to his family, he has to battle with someone else who's been trying to purchase the land. One sunshiny day, he notices that man's sister, Mary Kate Danaher (played by Maureen O'Hara) and instantly falls in love. The fiery redhead doesn't make it easy on him, and hilarity / romance ensues.
My Favorite Quiet Man Quotes
"When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey and when I drink water, I drink water."
"No patty-fingers in the holy water!"
"He'll regret it till his dying day, if ever he lives that long."
"I don't get this. Why do we have to get you along? Back in the States, I'd drive up, honk the horn, the gal'd come a-runnin'..."
"Come a-runnin? I'm no woman to be honked at and come a-runnin!"
"Now I want you's all to cheer like Protestants!"

Food for Your St. Patrick's Day Gathering
Option 1: Corned Beef and Cabbage
Option 2: Classic Movie Night Food + Irish Soda Bread and Shamrock Shakes
Personally, I'm going with Option 2. (However, I might dye Chicken Pot Pie green on the 17th (St. Paddy's Day is a Tuesday this year so my gathering is the Saturday before.).)
Irish Soda Bread
Irish Soda Bread
I'm sorry I don't have a recipe for you. I happen to think the store-bought loaves of bread are much easier and just as (or at least almost as) delicious. Once, I actually made it, and it was difficult, but very tasty so if you're into it, I recommend Pinterest! That site has all my best recipes!! Oh and there's also copy-cat recipes for McDonald's Shamrock Shakes there! Good luck.
Soda Bread tip: BUTTER IT! It's so much better with butter!
On the Menu for the Gathering
- Pizza
- Irish Soda Bread
- Green Rice Krispie Treats
- Shamrock Cookies
- Cupcakes
- Chips 'n Dip (you could dye French Onion dip green!)
- Green Beer (if I can find some)
- Shamrock Shakes
On Saint Patrick's Day, you should dye food green whenever possible.
Why Green?
Green has been associated with Ireland since way back before they revolted against Britain, and St. Patrick often wore green or shamrocks. He used the shamrock to teach the pagans about the Holy Trinity (three leaves) when he was converting the Irish. Even though St. Patrick was not actually Irish, he became the patron saint of Ireland for his efforts there.
Check out Wikipedia for more information about Ireland from long ago and what the "wearing of green" is all about.
